Sometimes the most important conversations start with the simplest questions.

“How you doing, bro?”

“Everything alright, mate?”

“You don’t seem yourself. Want to talk?”

We know that many men find it difficult to talk about how they’re feeling. Sometimes it’s because they don’t know where to start. Sometimes they don’t want to worry others. And sometimes, when someone asks how they are, it’s simply easier to say “I’m fine.”

But a conversation, a connection or someone taking the time to listen can make a real difference.

That’s why the Men’s Wellbeing Alliance is launching the first in a series of free, practical wellbeing toolkits designed to help men and the people around them build connection, start conversations and support one another.

Toolkit 1: Talking, Connecting, Coping and Supporting

Our first toolkit is built around a simple idea: you don’t need to have all the answers to make a difference.

You don’t have to be a mental health professional to check in with a friend, listen without judgement or encourage someone to seek support.

The toolkit provides straightforward, accessible guidance on:

  • Starting conversations about wellbeing and knowing when to ask twice.

  • Recognising when someone might be struggling.

  • Supporting a friend or family member without feeling you have to fix everything.

  • Understanding unhealthy coping strategies and exploring healthier alternatives.

  • Practical techniques for managing stress and looking after your wellbeing.

  • Building connection through friendships, activities and community groups.

  • Finding professional support and knowing what to do in a crisis.

  • Creating a simple personal wellbeing plan.

It’s designed to be useful whether you’re looking after your own wellbeing, supporting a mate, working with men in your community or simply wanting to understand how to help.

Small Conversations. Meaningful Connections.

At the Men’s Wellbeing Alliance, we believe that supporting men’s wellbeing isn’t just about responding when someone reaches a crisis.

It’s about building friendships, creating opportunities to connect, looking out for each other and making conversations about wellbeing part of everyday life.

And talking doesn’t always have to mean sitting face-to-face discussing feelings.

Sometimes the best conversations happen while walking, driving, gardening, watching football or having a cup of tea.

The important thing is creating opportunities for connection.

Ask once. If something doesn’t feel right, ask twice. Listen. Stay connected.

The First of a Series

This is Toolkit 1, the beginning of a developing series of practical resources from the Men’s Wellbeing Alliance.

Our aim is to make useful, accessible information available to men, families, community organisations and anyone interested in supporting men’s wellbeing.

These resources aren’t intended to be exhaustive or replace professional support. They’re starting points: tools you can use, share and adapt to your own circumstances.

Because improving men’s wellbeing doesn’t always require a complicated intervention.

Sometimes it starts with noticing someone, reaching out and showing that they matter.

Share it with a friend, a colleague, a family member or someone in your community.

And next time you ask someone how they’re doing, take a moment to really listen.
